Tim Hollingsworth OBE - Chief Executive

Tim is our lead spokesperson and is regularly interviewed in print and for broadcast media. His wide range of expertise includes how to make sport and physical activity accessible to everyone through tackling inequalities, driving innovation and greater use of open data in the sports sector, focusing on new ways of working in local communities and creating opportunities for children and young people to be more active.  

He joined us in 2018 after seven years as CEO at the British Paralympic Association, which included record breaking performances by ParalympicsGB at both the Rio 2016 and PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Games. Prior to that, Tim served as chief operating officer at UK Sport, and has also been a member of the IPC Paralympic Games Committee and a board director of the Youth Sport Trust. 

Mike Diaper OBE - Executive Director of Children, Young People and Tackling Inactivity

Mike leads our work with children and young people, and tackling activity. He is regularly interviewed about children and young people’s attitudes and experience of sport and activity, school sport and disability sport.  

He joined us in November 2006 from central government, where he worked across the Departments for Education and Skills and for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, leading the PE, School Sport and Club Links strategy.

He was awarded an OBE in the 2007 Queen’s Birthday Honours, for services to school sport. 

Charles Johnston - Executive Director of Property

Charles can speak about the work being done to ensure everyone has access to high quality sport and physical activity facilities, protecting playing fields, how towns and cities can be designed with activity in mind and the growing importance of people walking and cycling as part of their everyday journeys. 

A qualified engineer who also has a Master’s in business administration, Charles started at Sport England in 2008, was previously chairman and CEO of MDA Consulting, and director of construction and facilities at Sainsbury's.

He is also a Trustee on London Marathon Charitable Trust and Eastlands Trust Manchester. 

Lisa O'Keefe - Executive Director of Insight

Lisa’s team produce ground-breaking research to get under the skin of people’s behaviour around activity and unearth insight that influences change. 

Through the Active Lives Surveys, the insight team monitor and produce research on participation and attitudes to sport and physical activity in adults and children and young people in England. Lisa can speak about participation by age, gender, ethnicity and religion, sporting and activity trends over time, and the research behind the award-winning This Girl Can campaign. 

Lisa, who joined us in 2000, is also a former Scottish rugby international, winning 45 caps between 1994 and 2006. 

Chris Perks - Executive Director of Local Delivery

Chris is our expert in the local delivery of sport and how the community that a person lives in affects their relationship with physical activity.

Leading all of our local outreach teams, Chris is our lead spokesperson for how activity levels can be changed in a place. He also provides commentary on our local delivery pilots – 12 innovative programmes supported by £100 million of National Lottery funding to test and implement new approaches to tackling inactivity, founded on local knowledge which places local communities’ needs at the heart of the process. 

A former PE teacher, Chris continues to be actively involved in a variety of sports as a volunteer and participant. 

Phil Smith - Executive Director of Sport

Phil’s team manages our long-term multi-million pound investments in national governing bodies, and other organisations, to grow the number of people regularly engaged in sport and physical activity.

He is available to speak about participation in traditional sports, our work to create the world’s best talent system, club and workforce development (coaches, volunteers and staff), equality and diversity in sport, and sports governance. 

Phil joined us in 2008 from the Football Association, where he was their head of policy and public affairs, responsible for football industry policy in relation to Government in both the UK and international bodies. 

Kate Dale - Strategic Lead for Campaigns

Kate is responsible for delivering This Girl Can, our multi-award-winning campaign which is changing the way millions of people think about exercise and physical activity, and has inspired more than 3.9 million women. She is available to speak on This Girl Can, the gender gap in sport, and women’s experiences of sport and physical activity. 

A former journalist, Kate is as comfortable on a news panel as she is commenting on a feature in a glossy magazine. She is also a trustee for Women’s Sport Trust – a leading UK charity focused on using the power of sport to accelerate gender equality and stimulate social change. 

Sarah Ruane - Strategic Lead for Health

Sarah is available to speak about how healthcare professionals, including GPs and nurses, are being supported to encourage their patients to be active and the physical and mental health benefits that come from an active lifestyle.

She also speaks on efforts being made to help older people be active and people with long-term health conditions to move more, through our partnership with the Richmond Group of Charities that includes Mind, Macmillan and Diabetes UK.   

Leading our reducing inactivity teams, Sarah works with partners such as Public Health England and health charities to support and influence physical activity and health policy/ strategy, with a focus on reducing inequalities.

She began her career in local government and has held various roles in public health and leisure services.
